Morality as a Problem
An Essay on Nietzsche’s Critique of Morality
By Kevin Langyintuo
In this essay, I explore Friedrich Nietzsche’s argument that morality isn’t a given, it’s a problem. Specifically, I reconstruct and analyze Section 345 of The Gay Science, where Nietzsche criticizes selflessness, pity, and the historical dominance of Christian morality for stifling human flourishing.
Using the framework of morality critics (as outlined by Brian Leiter), I distinguish Nietzsche’s cultural critique from conventional moral theory. Through a mix of historical analysis, conceptual breakdown, and engagement with secondary sources, I show how Nietzsche’s call for a revaluation of values was not a descent into nihilism, but a push toward a more life-affirming ethics rooted in agency and strength.
